2023 KIA Sportage LX AWD SUV: Arrives With A New Look

2023 KIA Sportage LX – The Sportage brings simple changes for the 2023 model year, with the previously optional Nightfall Edition package replacing the S trim level.

The basic LX model also adds a new Value Edition package, which includes features that used to be reserved for a more luxurious trim.

The list comprises dark-colored 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, passive keyless entries, start buttons. Each Sportage EX now comes with a panoramic sunroof, and the EX Technology package and SX Turbo models add free map updates for ten years and new software and features to their navigation systems.

The 2023 Kia Sportage is a small SUV placed between the smaller Seltos and the three-row Sorento in the ranks of South Korean automakers.

Sportage is one of the old models in its class, but a variety of features at affordable prices and smooth driving help it remain an option—a decent choice.

However, Sportage does suffer from fuel economy and unsatisfactory utilities. Therefore, you may also want to see all-star classes such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester.

Waiting for the redesigned Sportage 2024, which offers many dramatic new upgrades and styles, is also worth considering.

Sportage performs best around the city, where ample low-end torque, smooth braking, and well-weighted steering can shine.

But when taken out of his comfort zone, Kia was very disappointing. Our Sportage test vehicle has an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

We managed to sprint 0-60 mph in 9 seconds, which is a poor performance for a small SUV with an improved engine. The brake pedal is a bit soft, but it is easy to measure the pressure needed to stop the Sportage quickly.

While the ride feels sporty, the suspension feels sloppy on winding roads. Combined with numb steering and sometimes on-off power delivery, the Sportage reveals something unsportsmanlike.

2023 KIA Sportage LX Engine

Most models have a quiet 181-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder but will meet most people’s needs. Those looking for a zestier option with faster acceleration will want a 237-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four, only available on the top-of-the-line SX Turbo trim.

Fuel Economy

Sportage lives near the bottom of the fuel consumption hierarchy, well below what the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V achieve.

According to the EPA, the front-drive Sportage, the base engine produces 23 mpg of the city and 30 highways.

When an all-wheel-drive was added, those numbers dropped by 1 and 4 mpg, respectively. The front-drive turbo model has an EPA estimate of 20 mpg of the city and 28 mpg of a highway, but that figure drops to 19 mpg of the city and 24 mpg of the road with all-wheel drive.

The all-wheel-drive SX Turbo produces a measly 23 mpg on a 75-mph highway fuel-efficient route.

2023 KIA Sportage LX Interior

2023 KIA Sportage LX Interior

If the interior of Kia is compared to Audi products, that means Kia is doing something right. The Sportage cabin is well executed and filled with a good mix of quality materials and functional features.

This is a reasonably spacious environment for passengers but not for cargo. Back seat accommodation will be suitable for adults, but you may hear some complaints about low seat cushion placement.

Limited cargo space for classes and storage space for smaller items is less, but carry-on baggage capacity and adjustable load floors make up for some of that.

Each model comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

The system is easy to use thanks to the knobs and physical buttons, but the menu has small icons, and the design does not look as sophisticated as other interiors. The desired option is wireless device charging and internal navigation.

The Sportage interior feels high quality for its class and has excellent features, but the sleek roofline creates compromise.

Drivers and passengers over 6 feet tall may notice a lack of headroom. The low roof makes the interior feel more petite than the original, and the thick roof pillars create some blind spots. But even with a soft top, it’s easy to get in or out of an SUV because of the wide door opening.

The seating position offers a good range of motion, especially with a giant telescopic steering wheel, but taller drivers expect the seat to be lower.

Buttons are clearly labeled, but each panel has the same shape and size buttons, so you’ll rely on those labels instead of finding controls with touch.

2023 KIA Sportage LX Technology

Sportage’s technological features are the best. The logical and approachable touchscreen is easy to use, with standard smartphone integration and charging options for front and rear passengers.

The stereo upgrades available are one of the best in its class. Navigation charts are clean and sharp. But voice commands are disappointing—the system is easily confused, especially when trying to control navigation—and can’t be accessed when using smartphone projections.

The Sportage’s range of driver aids works well, handling traffic without any positive errors or annoying jerks. Only the help of the problematic line guard; can misread the lane marker line and not provide much steering assistance to keep you in the lane.

Cargo capacity

Average cargo capacity for its class. There are 30.7 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 60.1 cubic feet with folded seats.

The low cargo floor makes it easy to load goods, but wheel holes go into the space. In the cabin, there is not much room for small things.

We like the generous phone box, but the center console container is on the small side, and the door container is narrow.

Have a child? Reclinable rear seat backrests and marked car seat anchors make installing a child seat easier, but installing a sizeable rear-facing seat will require that the front seat be moved forward.

2023 KIA Sportage LX Price

Starting at around $24,000, the Sportage cuts the CR-V base but is less practical and comes with a less desirable base engine.

Our top-of-the-line test vehicle comes with a little over $37,000, which only cuts the highest CX-5 trim that offers better performance with the same practicality.
